Volkswagen is widening the reach of its Chinese engineering. Technologies and vehicles developed in China will in future also be deployed in Southeast Asia, South America and Africa, according to a Reuters report published yesterday, confirming a shift in the group's China strategy away from the previous "in China, for China" approach. Rollout of the platform in South America is slated to begin by the end of the decade.

The pivot comes as the German automaker confronts a sharp contraction at home in its most important single market. China chief Ralf Brandstätter told Handelsblatt yesterday that the group could still be selling roughly 2.2 million cars a year there by 2030. Deliveries in China fell 30% to fewer than 1.4 million vehicles in the first nine months of 2026, the newspaper reported.

Earnings Due, and a Lowered Bar

Today brings the release of third-quarter 2026 results and the nine-month figures, scheduled for 07:30, with the analyst and press call set to begin at 09:00. The numbers land against a backdrop the company itself redrew on 18 September, when it cut its full-year 2026 guidance: revenue of around EUR 315 billion, an operating return on sales of up to 1%, and special effects totaling roughly EUR 10 billion. Net cash flow in the automotive division is still guided at EUR 3 billion to EUR 6 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Volkswagen?

Investors took the pre-results session in their stride. The Volkswagen share gained 0.8% yesterday, closing higher on the eve of the report.

Chips, and a Date With IG Metall

Beyond China and the quarterly ledger, the group has moved on two other fronts. Volkswagen and NXP have agreed a strategic semiconductor partnership, which the company says will strengthen its chip ecosystem. Separately, Volkswagen and IG Metall have settled on a timetable for wage talks: negotiations open on 24 November 2026 in Emden, according to media reports, and resume on 15 December 2026 in Zwickau.

Those dates follow a 23 October meeting at which the two sides agreed to enter formal negotiations. Talks that day ended without agreement, according to NDR, with Volkswagen intent on pressing ahead with the termination of ten collective agreements. IG Metall, the report said, is bracing for a confrontation around the turn of the year, when the peace obligation expires.

Cost relief on labor is a priority the company says it wants to secure as quickly as possible — a goal now set against shrinking volume in China and a profit outlook trimmed to a fraction of what Europe's largest carmaker once delivered.
