Volkswagen's week has been a study in competing pressures. A recall affecting roughly 72,700 electric vehicles, a reported pause on development of the future electric ID. Golf, and a downbeat earnings outlook all landed alongside a EUR 1.95 billion financing move and a mixed set of legal headlines. The common thread: a group trying to fund its electric future while its near-term profitability thins to a sliver.

The recall, reported by media on 2 November, covers models including the ID.3, ID.4, ID.7 and ID. Buzz, plus the Cupra Born. Possible battery defects prompted the action, and until owners bring their cars in for a workshop check, a charging cap of 80% applies. On the development side, Reuters reported that Volkswagen paused work on the upcoming electric ID. Golf so it could first secure the necessary investment, citing an internal message from brand chief Thomas Schäfer.

Those operational headaches sit against a sobering earnings picture. For 2026, the group expects a reported operating return on sales of up to 1%. Strip out special items and the figure comes in around 4%. The reported nine-month operating result collapsed 99% to EUR 0.1 billion, dragged down by negative special effects of EUR 8.7 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Volkswagen?

Analysts have been adjusting their markers accordingly. JPMorgan cut its price target for the preferred shares from EUR 110 to EUR 85 on 2 November while keeping a "Neutral" rating — a lower target, but no change in its investment verdict. Bernstein Research, meanwhile, resumed coverage of Volkswagen the same day with a "Market-Perform" rating and an EUR 80 target. Analyst Harry Martin pointed to the extensive restructuring as well as investments in products and local manufacturing.

The financing side offered a counterpoint to the gloom. Through its financing arm Volkswagen International Finance N.V., the group raised EUR 1.95 billion by placing two subordinated green hybrid bonds, as Bloomberg reported on Thursday. The capital comes as Audi, the group's premium subsidiary, has secured state subsidies and tax incentives for a planned USD 4 billion plant in Georgia, according to Reuters. Audi is also weighing a second expansion phase, though the construction itself remains a described project and any extension is still under review.

On the trading floor, the preferred stock lost 2.5% and closed at EUR 69.84. Media reports from dpa-AFX highlighted an arrest warrant against a defendant in the VW diesel trial, though they stopped short of establishing a causal link to the share price decline. The Braunschweig Regional Court issued the warrant against a 66-year-old defendant after the second day of proceedings, as Tagesschau reported; the man has lodged a complaint against the decision. Coverage of the trial therefore cannot be classified as a confirmed trigger for Friday's drop — the broader market and sector weakness, by several accounts, did the heavy lifting.

Separately, the Braunschweig Labor Court ordered Volkswagen to pay roughly EUR 300,000 to a former manager, according to media reports. Add it all up, and the picture is of a company juggling courtroom setbacks, a costly recall and a capital raise while its profit engine sputters toward a margin that leaves precious little room for error.
