Volkswagen shares shed 2.5% on Thursday, closing at EUR 69.84, as a global selloff in AI-related equities dragged the DAX sharply lower. Media accounts pinned the weak tone on the broader market mood and named no company-specific trigger for the decline. Reuters traced the pressure on German equities to the AI-driven rout in the US and Asia, along with mounting worries over tighter regulation of the artificial-intelligence sector.

A Quarter Deep in the Red

The market backdrop only sharpened the focus on Volkswagen's own numbers. On 29 October the group reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of EUR 75.28 billion and a net loss of EUR 5.82 billion — the 5.8 billion-euro shortfall that AP attributed to soft demand in China, US tariffs and thinner profits on electric vehicles. For the first nine months of 2026, revenue came in at EUR 233.4 billion, with operating profit of just EUR 0.1 billion and an operating return on sales before special items of 3.8%. Volkswagen stressed at publication that it faced immediate pressure to act.

Guidance Holds Despite the Loss

Management nonetheless left its full-year outlook untouched. Volkswagen still expects 2026 revenue of around EUR 315 billion and an operating return on sales of up to 1%. Analysts, though, are turning more cautious: JPMorgan cut its price target on Monday from EUR 110 to EUR 85 while reaffirming its "Neutral" rating, so the lower target came without any change in recommendation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Volkswagen?

Charging Capped in Britain

On the operational front, Volkswagen has limited charging on affected electric vehicles in the UK to 80% as a precaution, according to media reports, citing the risk of battery overheating and fire. The measure covers Volkswagen and Cupra models — roughly 5,000 vehicles in Britain — and ties into a worldwide recall of about 85,000 cars, with the charging cap applying specifically to the UK fleet.

Chip Deal, Logistics Trial and a Date With IG Metall

Elsewhere the group kept building out its technical base. On 26 October it agreed a strategic partnership with NXP Semiconductors covering semiconductors and a future zonal vehicle architecture with software-defined functions; the first model built on that platform is slated for 2027. Two days later, Volkswagen wrapped up AutoLog, a joint innovation project with Deutsche Telekom, Unikie and BIBA that spent more than two years testing automated vehicle movements under real logistics conditions in Emden. Labour talks are also on the calendar: Volkswagen and IG Metall settled on 24 November 2026 in Emden as the opening date, with a follow-up session set for 15 December 2026 in Zwickau.
