Volkswagen Trims UK Charging to 80% While Elli Exits the Hardware Business
Published on 11/07/2026 at 14:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deVolkswagen has moved to cap charging on roughly 5,000 electric vehicles in the UK at 80% as a precaution, a step tied to the risk of battery overheating and fire. The affected cars come from Volkswagen and Cupra, and the restriction sits inside a global recall covering about 85,000 vehicles — the UK charging cap applies locally, while the recall itself spans markets worldwide.
The measure emerged alongside a broader reassessment of the group's electric ambitions. Media reports on Tuesday said Elli, Volkswagen's charging subsidiary, is refocusing its business and pulling out of charging hardware and the construction of charging infrastructure for corporate customers. The European charging network, with more than one million points, will continue, as will fleet solutions and Volkswagen Naturstrom. What the restructuring means for Elli's roughly 400 employees was left open in the report.
A Quarter That Weighed on the Result
The operational backdrop is strained. For January through September 2026, Volkswagen posted revenue of EUR 233.4 billion, yet operating profit reached just EUR 0.1 billion, according to company figures. The operating return before special items came in at 3.8%, as stated in the interim report published on 29 October. AP on 30 October cited weak demand in China, US tariffs and lower profits from electric vehicles among the burdens on the group.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Volkswagen?
The third quarter alone, reported on 29 October, brought revenue of EUR 75.28 billion and a loss after tax of EUR 5.82 billion. Even so, Volkswagen held its full-year guidance: revenue of around EUR 315 billion for 2026 and an operating return on sales of up to 1%.
Analysts Stay Cautious, NXP Steps In
JPMorgan cut its price target for Volkswagen on Monday from EUR 110 to EUR 85 while reaffirming its "Neutral" rating — a lower target with no change in recommendation. On the technology side, the group said on 26 October that it had picked NXP Semiconductors as strategic technology partner for the microcontrollers in its future zonal vehicle architecture, with the first vehicle built on that platform slated for 2027.
Labor talks are also on the calendar. Volkswagen and IG Metall agreed on 23 October to open wage negotiations on 24 November 2026 in Emden, continuing on 15 December 2026 in Zwickau.
The stock closed at EUR 69.84 yesterday, down 2.5% as a selloff in AI-related shares dragged the DAX sharply lower. Reports pointed to weak market sentiment as the driver, with no Volkswagen-specific trigger cited for the decline.
