Occupational physical work often unfolds under time pressure, with little room for individual control. The study also looked beyond the gym and the workplace, examining everyday activities. Light domestic chores showed a modest but measurable protective association, hinting that a mix of mild physical effort and personal autonomy can produce positive effects.

For employers and workplace health programmes, the implications are practical. Experts caution that simply lightening physical loads may miss the point if psychological strain stays high. Ergonomics improvements, they argue, need to go hand in hand with cutting job-related stress and giving staff more say over how they work — otherwise the cognitive health of the workforce remains at risk.
