European offerings are sharpening their specifications too. The Marsail office chair, for instance, comes with backrests that recline from 90 to 120 degrees, lumbar supports adjustable in two dimensions, and height-adjustable headrests. It handles loads up to 150 kilograms and includes eight centimeters of cushioning.
The shared goal is preventing exhaustion. Experts link fatigue directly to declining concentration and weaker decision-making.
The Brain's Empty Tank
Ergonomics alone, however, does not determine judgment quality. The brain consumes roughly 20 percent of daily energy. When micronutrients run low, decision patterns shift—a phenomenon researchers call the "Hungry Judge Effect."
The evidence is striking: judges granted parole requests far less often before lunch. After eating, approval rates climbed to as much as two-thirds. The culprits are neurotransmitters—dopamine, serotonin, and GABA—which govern impulse control and cognitive function under stress.
