Wienerberger Overhauls Operations as BlackRock Trims Stake and Profit Outlook Dims
Published on 10/07/2026 at 15:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deWienerberger is putting its own business operations under the microscope while accelerating a cost-reduction drive, as the Austrian building materials group scrambles to defend margins against a stubborn downturn in residential construction.
The dual move — a strategic review paired with faster savings measures — is management's answer to weakening earnings across the current fiscal year. The aim is straightforward: keep profitability intact while market conditions remain hostile.
Guidance Cut Twice in Six Months
The scale of the challenge is laid bare in the numbers. Wienerberger now expects full-year 2026 operating EBITDA of roughly €640–650 million. That marks a steep descent from the more than €800 million the company had targeted at the start of the year, before the goal was already pared back to around €700 million in July.
For the third quarter alone, the group projects operating EBITDA of approximately €170–180 million, on revenue in the range of about €1.2 billion to €1.3 billion.
Housing Slump and Cost Inflation Squeeze Earnings
Two forces are doing the damage. New-build residential activity remains stuck at low levels, particularly in the UK and North America, where there is still no sign of a meaningful pickup in construction volumes. On top of that, sharply higher outlays for energy, raw materials and logistics continue to weigh on the bottom line.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?
Reuters noted that even the customary seasonal uptick in September came in weaker than anticipated, pointing to sustained pressure on new-build activity across the US, Canada and the UK.
Strategic Review, Cost Cuts and Earlier Restructuring Steps
To counter the squeeze, Wienerberger has launched a strategic review of its businesses and sped up its cost-cutting program. Management intends to lift efficiency across the entire group and gain flexibility to respond to market swings.
The latest measures extend a series of earlier restructuring moves. Just over three weeks ago, the company shut down a brick production line. More than a month ago, its chief executive stepped down.
BlackRock Position Slips Below 4%
Investor positioning has shifted as well. On September 24, BlackRock disclosed that it had crossed a reporting threshold in Wienerberger. The asset manager's total holding fell to 3.99%, split between 2.75% in voting rights from shares and 1.25% in financial instruments.
November 12 Interim Report to Shed Light on Overhaul
Clarity on the group's future direction and the results of its savings program should arrive in the coming weeks. Wienerberger has said it will publish official results for the first nine months of 2026 on November 12, 2026. The same day, the company plans to present an update on the strategic review and its cost-reduction measures, giving market participants a look at the planned realignment.
Shares Down Nearly Half Since January
The prolonged weakness is clearly visible in the stock chart. On Wednesday, Wienerberger shares changed hands at €15.88, a decline of 1.6%. The stock has lost 48% since the start of the year. The previous session closed at €16.14, with the year-to-date loss then standing at 47% — a trajectory that reflects investor skepticism about a swift recovery.
