Wienerberger Puts Operations Under Review After September Shortfall Forces Second Guidance Cut
Published on 10/07/2026 at 20:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deWienerberger has launched a strategic review of its business activities while stepping up an existing cost-reduction drive, as the Austrian building materials group confronts a stubborn downturn in residential construction and rising input expenses. Management is aiming to shield profitability from a market environment that has deteriorated faster than anticipated.
The trigger for the twin measures is a weaker-than-expected earnings trajectory. For the third quarter of 2026, Wienerberger projects operating EBITDA of roughly EUR 170 million to EUR 180 million on revenue in the low billions. The company now expects full-year operating EBITDA of EUR 640 million to EUR 650 million — a target that had already been trimmed to around EUR 700 million in July, according to APA.
September Fails to Deliver the Usual Seasonal Lift
What unsettled management was a September that fell short of internal expectations. The seasonal pickup in construction activity at the tail end of summer proved less pronounced than hoped, according to media reports. Reuters pointed to sustained pressure on new-build activity in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, where a meaningful recovery has yet to materialize — a trend that is weighing on sales volumes across core markets.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?
The residential construction slump remains the single biggest drag on operations, with activity in the UK and North America stuck at low levels. At the same time, sharply higher outlays for energy, raw materials and logistics are eroding the group's earnings power across the board, with freight and input costs singled out as persistent burdens.
BlackRock Trims Its Position
The latest downgrade to the annual targets lands in an already sour market climate. The stock has shed 49% since the start of the year. Ahead of the profit warning, major shareholder BlackRock reported on 24 September that it had reduced its total holding to 3.99% from 4.96%. As of the reporting date, 2.75% consisted of direct voting rights from shares, with 1.25% held through financial instruments.
The selling pressure of recent months reflects lingering uncertainty across European building construction and civil engineering. Higher interest rates and restrained investment budgets in housing are visibly dampening demand for bricks and pipe systems.
November 12 Report to Shed Light on Restructuring
Investors will get a clearer picture of the full extent of the strain in late autumn. Wienerberger is due to publish its complete nine-month report for 2026 on 12 November. Alongside those interim figures, management has promised an update on the strategic review and on the accelerated cost-optimization measures, giving market participants their first real insight into the planned realignment of the group.
