Wienerberger Trades Near 52-Week Low as Cost Cuts Race a Housing Slump
Published on 10/19/2026 at 12:20 | Editorial boerse-global.deWienerberger shares are changing hands just above their 52-week trough of 15.03 euros, a level that frames the scale of the challenge facing the Austrian brickmaker. The stock closed Friday at 16.18 euros and was quoted at 16.05 euros pre-market, leaving it down 47% since the start of the year.
The slide follows a downgrade to full-year guidance. In its trading update, management set the 2026 operating EBITDA target at 640 to 650 million euros, having previously trimmed its annual profitability goals. For the third quarter, Wienerberger is guiding to operating EBITDA of roughly 170 to 180 million euros on revenue of about 1.2 to 1.3 billion euros.
Weak new-build demand on both sides of the Atlantic
The root of the problem is a stubbornly soft residential construction market. Demand for new housing has failed to recover in the UK and North America in particular, while energy, raw material and logistics costs continue to squeeze margins. In response, the group has accelerated its cost-reduction programme and launched a strategic review aimed at adapting to changed conditions in its core regions.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?
Analysts see little relief on the near horizon. On 12 October, Wiener Privatbank reiterated its "Hold" rating but cut its fair value estimate to 16.40 euros from 23.10 euros. Analyst Nicolas Kneip pointed to the tough operating environment and the absence of any short-term rebound in residential construction, flagging upcoming capacity adjustments and temporary production stoppages.
Jefferies also initiated coverage of the building materials maker with a "Hold" rating on 14 October, according to media reports, with its analysts expecting meaningful recovery momentum only in 2027. The cautious stance is echoed across the sell side: while the shares look cheap on valuation, analysts argue it is too early to buy, with insufficient catalysts to spark a demand revival in the short term.
UBS trims its holding
Not every signal is purely operational. A voting rights notification showed that UBS Group slightly reduced its stake in voting rights and attributable instruments as of 8 October.
Investors now have two dates circled. Wienerberger participates in the GEWINN trade fair in Vienna on 22 October. The more substantive test comes on 12 November 2026, when the company publishes its nine-month report and management details the findings of the strategic review alongside progress on the accelerated savings drive. Only then is the market likely to get a clearer read on how quickly the group can push back against the headwinds buffeting the construction sector.
