Wienerberger Triggers Strategic Review as Housing Weakness Forces Guidance Cut
Published on 10/08/2026 at 06:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deShares in Wienerberger came under heavy selling pressure after the building materials group trimmed its profit targets for the current financial year, with the stock shedding 4.0% on Wednesday to close at EUR 15.49. That leaves the equity hovering just 1.2% above its 52-week low, a sign of how quickly sentiment has deteriorated around the Austrian brickmaker.
The trigger was a trading update published on Tuesday in which management slashed its operating EBITDA guidance for full-year 2026 to a range of EUR 640m to EUR 650m. The revision marks a sharp downgrade from previous expectations and reflects a confluence of pressures that have been building across the group's key markets.
September Recovery Falls Short of Hopes
At the heart of the downgrade lies a weaker-than-anticipated seasonal rebound in construction activity during September. The company had been counting on a pickup in building work as the year progressed, but that recovery failed to materialise at the expected pace.
Compounding the problem is persistent softness in residential construction, particularly in the UK, the United States and Canada. Order books in these markets have remained thin as clients hold back on new projects, and the slowdown shows no sign of abating.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?
On top of the demand-side headwinds, Wienerberger is grappling with meaningful cost inflation. Higher energy prices, more expensive raw materials and rising logistics expenses are all eating into operating margins, leaving the group with little room to manoeuvre on profitability.
Third-Quarter Figures Point to Continued Strain
The preliminary numbers for the third quarter paint a similarly challenging picture. Wienerberger expects revenue of roughly EUR 1.2bn to EUR 1.3bn for the three-month period, with operating EBITDA projected at between EUR 170m and EUR 180m.
In response to these conditions, the company has announced an accelerated cost-optimisation programme and is putting its operating business under the microscope as part of a comprehensive strategic review. The aim is to align the cost base with the changed market environment and protect efficiency in the regions feeling the most pressure.
Specifics on the savings measures and the progress of the strategic analysis have yet to be disclosed. Management has indicated that further details will be presented on 12 November 2026, when Wienerberger plans to publish its full nine-month report alongside a broader update on the steps being taken.
Analyst Caution Adds to the Gloom
The guidance reduction prompted a cautious response from market watchers. According to media reports, Morgan Stanley lowered its price target for Wienerberger from EUR 18.00 to EUR 16.00 while maintaining its "Underweight" rating on the stock.
That combination of operational headwinds and analyst scepticism has kept investors on the sidelines. With the latest decline, the shares remain pinned close to their yearly lows, and the question now is whether the upcoming nine-month figures in November can restore any degree of confidence — much will depend on how demand in the group's core markets evolves between now and year-end.
