Wienerberger Tumbles as Weak September Construction and Surging Costs Force Guidance Cut

Shares in Wienerberger came under heavy selling pressure after the Austrian building materials group trimmed its full-year operating targets, citing a construction market that has refused to bounce back. The stock fell 4.1% to EUR 16.11 in today's session, extending a 3.9% slide to EUR 16.14 recorded the previous day as investors digested the downbeat trading update.

At the heart of the revision is a disappointing September. Wienerberger had counted on a seasonal pickup in building activity, but the recovery failed to materialise, leaving the group's core residential construction markets — the UK, the US and Canada — stuck in a prolonged lull. The sluggish new-build pipeline has been compounded by a fresh wave of cost inflation: since late August, expenses for energy, raw materials and logistics have climbed noticeably, squeezing margins further.

Third Quarter Falls Short

The softer conditions left their mark on the three months through September. According to preliminary estimates, Wienerberger expects third-quarter revenue of roughly EUR 1.3 billion and operating EBITDA of about EUR 170 million to EUR 180 million, both trailing earlier projections. Revenue and operating profit for the period came in below previous expectations.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?

For the full year 2026, management now guides operating EBITDA to a range of EUR 640 million to EUR 650 million, down from the EUR 700 million the company had previously flagged.

Cost Cuts Accelerated, Strategy Under Review

Wienerberger is responding on the cost side, pledging to speed up existing efficiency measures to counter the mounting pressure on earnings. Alongside those efforts, the group is conducting a strategic review of its business segments, aiming to realign its portfolio with the tougher environment.

Investors will get a fuller picture in a few weeks. On 12 November 2026, Wienerberger will publish interim results for the first nine months and update the market on the progress of that strategic review. The key question for shareholders is whether the announced savings programmes can shore up margins in both the European and North American operations.

A Period of Upheaval

The current headwinds cap a turbulent stretch for the company. Roughly three weeks ago, Wienerberger announced the closure of a brick production facility. Management changes have added to the uncertainty: the chief executive stepped down more than a month ago, and the head of investor relations was replaced about three weeks ago. On top of that, asset manager BlackRock trimmed its stake in Wienerberger around a week ago, a move that has weighed on sentiment as the group prepares to report.
