XPeng Pitches Its Self-Driving Stack to Western Rivals as Robotaxis Eye 2027 Overseas Debut

XPeng is quietly repositioning itself from an electric-vehicle manufacturer into a technology vendor, and the shift is starting to show up in both its regulatory footprint and its share price. The stock closed Friday at EUR 8.84, up 3.8%, a modest recovery from the 52-week low of EUR 8.16 it touched earlier this month — a bounce helped along by a friendlier session for Chinese listings on US exchanges and by a pair of strategic announcements.
At the center of the story is a reported plan to license XPeng's software and technology solutions to additional foreign automakers, extending a relationship that so far has been defined by its tie-up with Volkswagen. The timing is not incidental. Selling EVs in China remains a margin-squeezing exercise, and licensing platform and software rights offers a higher-margin revenue stream that could steady the core vehicle business.
A UN Taskforce Seat and a Robotaxi Timeline
XPeng's ambitions got a formal stamp of approval on the regulatory front Friday, when the company took on the OICA secretary role within a newly formed taskforce of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The body, jointly chaired by France and China, is designed to standardize the exchange of environmental and safety data for automated driving systems. For XPeng, the seat signals a push to be seen as an international technology architect rather than just another carmaker.
That positioning is matched by concrete operational plans. Vice chairman and president Brian Gu confirmed Friday on the sidelines of a conference in Singapore, in remarks to broadcaster CNA, that XPeng intends to run its first robotaxi trials in selected cities outside China in 2027. He did not name specific target markets.
The fleet's technical foundation is the GX SUV, equipped with four in-house Turing AI chips and the VLA 2.0 software architecture. According to the company, the system operates without LiDAR sensors and without high-resolution map data. In Guangzhou, XPeng has held a permit since August for driverless testing on designated routes, with regular passenger service there previously targeted for 2027. External partners are expected to run the fleets, while XPeng supplies the hardware and software.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XPeng?
The Valuation Question Hinges on Licensing
For investors, the pivotal issue is whether XPeng can convert its autonomous-driving and vehicle-architecture systems into scalable, recurring licensing fees. Unit sales alone no longer earn a premium in the public markets. Deliveries did rise 15% quarter-over-quarter to 118,390 units in the third quarter of 2026, according to company figures, but long-term profitability depends on new earnings streams.
If Western automakers adopt Chinese platforms to shorten their own development cycles, XPeng transforms from a low-margin hardware producer into a high-margin technology supplier. Should further deals stall on geopolitical concerns or compatibility issues, the company remains heavily exposed to its low-margin home market.
A successful transformation would open considerable room for a re-rating. The Volkswagen collaboration has already demonstrated that major Western players are willing to buy Chinese software expertise. Additional licensing contracts would ease the capital burden of in-house vehicle development and smooth entry into regulated markets.
Graz, Robotaxis and a Robotics Bet
XPeng is also advancing its European presence on the ground. At contract manufacturer Magna's plant in Graz, Austria, the G9L model recently completed its first European production trial, becoming the company's fourth model built there. Separately, the company began commercial preparations this week: under the name XPENG YOYO, it opened online registration for a robotaxi service in China via invitation codes.
Beyond mobility, XPeng continues to diversify its technology base into robotics. Production is targeted at 1,000 units per month from the end of the current year, with more than 85% of suppliers shared with the passenger-car business. That division closed a USD 900 million financing round in August, backed by participants including Alibaba and Tencent. External robot sales are planned from the second half of 2027.
Regulatory Headwinds and Margin Pressure
The optimistic case faces substantial risks. Exporting technology to Western markets sits on politically delicate ground. Security concerns about connected vehicle systems and software components from China could deter Western automakers from committing to broad, binding partnerships.
XPeng at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
At home, competition remains fierce. Despite 41,256 vehicles delivered in September 2026, the battle in China still demands heavy discounts and aggressive marketing spending. If the plan to monetize software licenses abroad runs into regulatory resistance, XPeng would be thrown back entirely on its capital-intensive volume business. In that scenario, the hefty investment in autonomous driving would weigh directly on results without the hoped-for relief from licensing fees.
Paris as the Next Catalyst
Technically, as long as the stock can defend its 52-week low of EUR 8.16, the chance of a bottoming pattern remains intact. A break below that level under renewed selling pressure would threaten a continuation of the medium-term downtrend.
The next concrete catalyst is close at hand. On October 12, the G9L will make its world debut at the Paris Motor Show, accompanied by the official opening of orders and the company's appearance in the show's Autonomous Lab. Investors will be watching closely to gauge whether international interest is strong enough to underpin XPeng's European push over the longer term.
