XRP has staged a remarkable recovery since mid-August, climbing from a low of $0.9877 on August 17 to trade near $1.50 — a surge of roughly 45 percent in just a handful of sessions. The token was last seen around $1.48, holding just beneath the peak of last week's rally, yet the technical picture is growing increasingly fraught.

The advance traces back to a potent combination of macro and market mechanics. Falling US Treasury yields, triggered by the Treasury Department's announcement that it would significantly expand buyback operations in long-dated bonds, provided the initial spark. That was followed by a wave of short covering: between August 19 and 21, short positions worth more than $3.3 billion were closed, according to media reports. Market makers simultaneously placed hedges totaling $1.3 billion across XRP and Bitcoin, suggesting institutions are participating in the upside while bracing for a potential pullback.

Institutional money is returning — but unevenly

The recovery has left clear footprints in the spot ETF complex. Over the first three trading days of last week, XRP ETFs absorbed $8.16 million in fresh inflows, including $5.81 million in a single day — the strongest daily figure since late July. Net assets under management across the funds have now crossed the $1 billion threshold, up from $933 million in mid-August.

The flows, however, have been anything but steady. In the week ending August 8, inflows collapsed by 93 percent to just $1.01 million before the latest rebound took hold. Derivatives markets tell a similar story of renewed risk appetite: open interest in XRP futures and options jumped roughly 27.6 percent week-over-week to $3.50 billion as of August 22.

On-chain data adds another layer to the institutional narrative. Large wallets have been accumulating more than 10 million XRP daily throughout August, and at Binance, 91 percent of outflows originated from major holders. Ripple's escrow releases have been notably disciplined: the company unlocked 1 billion XRP earlier this month but immediately re-locked 700 million, leaving a net increase of just 300 million tokens in circulating supply.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?

Washington enters the frame

The political dimension has injected a fresh catalyst. Vice President J.D. Vance, appearing on Newsmax on August 22, floated the idea of a sovereign wealth fund holding a crypto reserve — explicitly naming XRP — as a response to the US national debt, which has grown to $40 trillion. The comments arrived as the CLARITY Act, which would establish market structure rules for digital assets, was pushed to September; the bill still needs ten votes from Senate Democrats to advance.

Ripple's own scale offers perspective on how far the token is from reserve-asset status. The company processed $13 trillion in transaction volume last year — but with zero crypto component, underscoring the gap between payments infrastructure and a genuine reserve role.

Ecosystem momentum builds

Beyond the macro and political currents, Ripple has been quietly expanding its institutional footprint. Last week, the company announced a partnership with South Korea's Jeonbuk Bank, which will deploy Ripple Payments for cross-border transfers. Ripple also unveiled a collaboration with Clearpool and Cicada Partners to build an institutional credit and lending platform on the XRP Ledger.

Ripple President Monica Long said institutional capital is moving toward the XRP Ledger at a rapid pace, pointing to the company's investments in ZILO and Licuido as part of a broader push into tokenized asset infrastructure. Canary Capital CEO Steven McClurg added to the bullish chorus, arguing that XRP will win the race for institutional financial infrastructure, citing the Cicada Credit and Clearpool lending business as a potentially enormous growth driver. Trading volume at South Korea's Upbit exchange has climbed 273 percent since March — evidence, McClurg suggests, of deepening Asian demand.

On the technical side, the XRP Ledger's v3.3.0 update went live in early August, introducing encrypted balance transfers and batched transactions. Ripple now supports the associated amendment proposal, which requires approval from 28 of 35 validators over a two-week period to activate on mainnet.

A security incident and a crowded trade

The optimism, however, has been tempered by a security event. Users reported an exploit at a bridge on the XRP Ledger, with roughly 200,000 XRP drained in the incident. Details remain scarce — neither the exact mechanism nor the affected services have been confirmed — but for a network positioning itself as the backbone of institutional finance, the reputational sting is real regardless of the relatively modest sum involved.

The charts are flashing similar warnings. XRP trades 34 percent above its 50-day moving average of $1.11, and the relative strength index sits at 85.7 — deeply overbought territory. The token is also 16 percent above its 200-day average, leaving it vulnerable to profit-taking. Analysts point to resistance near $1.50, with near-term support identified in the $1.37 to $1.38 zone, though some technical observers also flag a lower support level around $0.50 on longer timeframes.

The near-term catalysts are already on the calendar: the CLARITY Act vote scheduled for September 15 and the Swell/Apex conference in late October. For now, investors are left weighing a compelling long-term story — Washington's crypto-reserve chatter, institutional adoption, and a tightening supply picture — against a market that looks increasingly stretched and a network still answering for its latest security lapse.
