Carbon-capture facility commissioned
On September 28, 2026, Rio Tinto and Shougang Group commissioned an industrial-scale carbon-capture trial facility at Shougang's operations in China, according to an issuer release. The facility can process up to 3,000 cubic meters of blast-furnace gas per hour and capture up to 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.
The facility is part of a partnership established through a 2022 memorandum of understanding covering low-carbon sintering, blast-furnace and basic-oxygen-furnace optimization, and carbon-capture and utilization technologies. Rio Tinto provided technical support, while the facility will operate long-term for trial and research purposes, the release said.
Winu project agreement
In a September 10, 2026 release, Rio Tinto said it had signed a Project Agreement with Nyangumarta Warrarn Aboriginal Corporation for the proposed Winu copper-gold mine. The project remains subject to regulatory and other required approvals and a final investment decision, according to the company release.
