SoftBank's AI Strategy Fuels Sustained Profitability
12.02.2026 - 17:31:21SoftBank Group has delivered its fourth consecutive profitable quarter, signaling a decisive turnaround for the Japanese technology conglomerate. The resurgence is being driven by founder Masayoshi Son's substantial strategic bet on artificial intelligence, a move that coincides with a fundamental restructuring of the company's investment portfolio.
To finance its aggressive push into the AI sector, SoftBank is actively reallocating capital. During the latter half of the last year, the company divested NVIDIA shares valued at $5.8 billion and reduced its stake in T-Mobile by $12.7 billion.
Concurrently, the firm is increasing its financial leverage. Holdings in chip designer Arm and its domestic telecommunications unit, SoftBank Corp., are being utilized more extensively as collateral for new loans. This generated liquidity is being channeled directly into expanding its AI ecosystem, which includes the recently agreed acquisition of private equity firm DigitalBridge Group. This strategic shift marks a clear transition from a broad-based technology investor to a specialized AI-focused holding company.
OpenAI Investment Emerges as Key Profit Engine
The company reported a net profit of 248.6 billion yen (approximately $1.6 billion) for its third fiscal quarter, ending in December. This result stands in sharp contrast to the substantial losses recorded in the same period a year prior. The recovery has been powered primarily by valuation gains within its technology portfolio.
The investment in OpenAI has been a standout performer. The Vision Fund unit recorded a valuation gain of $4.2 billion from this single holding in the latest quarter, almost single-handedly offsetting declines in other portfolio positions. SoftBank now holds roughly an 11 percent stake in the developer of ChatGPT, with cumulative investments exceeding $30 billion. The total unrealized gain on the OpenAI position has reached $19.8 billion.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SoftBank?
