Chinese EV maker BYD pivots from price wars to autonomy, unveiling China's first 4nm self-driving chip and a no-cap liability guarantee for urban navigation assist, as Datang SUV pre-orders top 100,000.

BYD is steering its investor story away from the familiar terrain of sales volumes and price wars. Instead, the Chinese electric vehicle giant is hammering home a new message: autonomy, software, and chip integration are now the driver of value. The company backed that claim with a slew of announcements — including a no-cap liability guarantee for its urban navigation assist and what it calls China’s first 4-nanometer chip for autonomous driving — just as its flagship Datang SUV racked up over 100,000 pre-orders in two weeks.

Unlimited Liability for Urban Navigation

Starting immediately, BYD will cover damages arising from the use of its God’s Eye A and B urban navigation systems for the first year after vehicle delivery. Existing customers who upgrade via an over-the-air update to God’s Eye 5.0 also qualify. The promise is free of charge, carries no upper limit, and will not affect next year’s insurance premiums. BYD says it covers direct economic losses including vehicle repairs, third-party property damage, and personal injury — as long as the system is used as intended. The move extends an existing liability guarantee for smart parking.

The offer targets new buyers and current owners alike, a bid to accelerate adoption of assisted driving features. BYD also said it will make the God’s Eye B system — which includes LiDAR — available on all models for an extra 12,000 yuan, and teased a larger over-the-air update for the God’s Eye C version in December 2026.

First Chinese 4nm Chip Moves into Production

On May 28, BYD unveiled the Xuanji A3, which it describes as the first Chinese 4-nanometer chip designed for autonomous driving. The chip is already in series production and, according to the company, supports Level 3 and Level 4 autonomy. Three Xuanji A3 units working together deliver more than 2,100 TOPS of computing power. BYD frames the chip as part of a broader architecture push that includes the Xuanji Architecture 2.0, a physical AI large model, and future hardware with multiple redundancy for higher levels of driving automation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Data as a Competitive Moat

BYD now operates a fleet of over 3.15 million vehicles equipped with driver-assistance systems. Its God’s Eye platform generates more than 200 million kilometers of data daily. The company says it employs over 5,000 engineers working on assisted driving technology. The message to investors is clear: hardware, software, data, and liability protection are bundled into a single, integrated proposition.

Datang SUV: Premium Ambitions on Display

While BYD pushes the autonomy narrative, it hasn’t taken its foot off the product pedal. The Datang SUV, built in Xi’an under the Dynasty family, heads to market in mid-June priced between 250,000 and 320,000 yuan (roughly €32,000 to €41,000). The fully electric version uses BYD’s second-generation Blade battery and seats seven in a 2+2+3 layout with zero-gravity front seats. Inside, a 3-nanometer cockpit chip and a 27-speaker Devialet audio system underline the premium aspirations. A plug-in hybrid variant with a 1.5-liter turbo engine rounds out the lineup.

Alongside the Datang, BYD is rolling out the Sealion 06 DM-i, a plug-in hybrid SUV from the Ocean series that offers up to 310 kilometers of pure electric range and a combined range of roughly 1,845 kilometers. It comes with an optional LiDAR-based driving assistance system.

Export Pivot with the Dolphin G

For overseas markets — especially Europe — BYD is preparing the Dolphin G, its smallest plug-in hybrid yet. With a combined range expected to exceed 1,000 kilometers, the model is designed to take on conventional hybrid city runabouts. The Dolphin G could be among the first vehicles assembled at BYD’s new plant in Szeged, Hungary.

Stock Movement and Upcoming Corporate Events

BYD’s H-shares ended the week at HK$91.30, up 1.11% from the prior session. The stock traded between HK$89.15 and HK$93.30 on May 29. The company’s annual general meeting is set for June 9, followed by the ex-dividend date on June 11. BYD has proposed a dividend of 0.358 yuan per share for the 2025 fiscal year, with payment scheduled by the end of July.

Analysts view the model offensive favorably, noting that BYD is positioning itself to compete at the top of the global EV market. Whether the Datang SUV can gain traction in the premium segment will become clearer after its June 15 launch. Yet for investors weighing the economics of a free liability guarantee against the potential for wider ADAS adoption, the next trading sessions will offer the first clues. BYD has carved out an autonomy narrative that stands apart from the recent chatter about monthly sales, margin pressure, and new-model order numbers.
