D-Wave Quantum Faces a Rival’s Landmark IPO as Its Own Commercial Engine Accelerates
04.06.2026 - 18:24:22 | boerse-global.deQuantinuum’s arrival on the Nasdaq has reshuffled the pecking order in quantum computing, and no company feels the pressure more directly than D-Wave Quantum. The newly listed firm raised $1.68 billion on Wednesday by pricing 28 million shares at $60 apiece — well above the $53-to-$55 range it initially set — giving it a post-IPO market value of $15.6 billion. That places Quantinuum second among publicly traded quantum pure plays, behind only IonQ at roughly $27 billion, while D-Wave slips to third with an equity value of about $11 billion. Wedbush analysts called the debut a structural positive for the entire sector, arguing that more listed names improve price discovery and draw in institutional investors who had previously given the segment only a cursory glance.
Yet D-Wave’s own numbers show a commercial story that is far from eclipsed. Bookings for the first quarter of 2026 hit $33.4 million — a leap of nearly 2,000% from the same period a year earlier — powered by a $20 million system sale to Florida Atlantic University and a two-year quantum-computing-as-a-service contract with a Fortune 100 company worth $10 million. Revenue for the quarter came in at $2.86 million, a figure that fell short of some analyst projections even as usage of D-Wave’s Advantage2 processor rose 314% year over year. The company’s liquidity position stands at roughly $588 million, which management describes as the highest cash reserve in its history.
The United States government is adding its own weight to D-Wave’s momentum. On June 4, the Department of Commerce confirmed a $100 million grant funded through the CHIPS and Science Act, earmarked for advancing superconducting quantum technology. The award mirrors a $100 million allocation Quantinuum received, and both come on the heels of a broader $2 billion quantum initiative announced by the administration on May 21. D-Wave is also tapping into corporate anticipation abroad: a survey published by the company on June 3, polling more than 1,000 decision?makers at large UK enterprises, found that 41% expect quantum computing to unlock over £100 million in value within a year of deployment. Logistics, workforce planning and resource allocation — precisely the optimisation challenges D?Wave’s annealing systems tackle — topped the list of intended uses.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?
Technologically, D?Wave is running a dual?platform strategy, meshing its mature quantum?annealing line with a gate?model programme acquired through the $250 million purchase of Quantum Circuits Inc. in January. The roadmap calls for a fault?tolerant system with 100 logical qubits by 2032, with intermediate milestones that include a 17?physical?qubit gate?model system in 2026, a 49?qubit array achieving 20?fold error reduction in 2027, and 10 logical qubits for early fault?tolerant algorithms by 2030. The company claims its superconducting architecture can execute quantum error?correction cycles 100 to 1,000 times faster than the trapped?ion approach used by Quantinuum, a technical edge it intends to press as the field matures.
Wall Street has taken note. Rosenblatt Securities raised its price target on D?Wave to $43 after the company’s investor day, maintaining a “Buy” rating and citing its unique position as the only hardware provider with both an optimisation platform and a universal gate?model offering. At the time, the stock was changing hands at roughly €24 in Europe, having climbed about 55% over the past twelve months but still sitting around 37% below the October high of €38.48. The gap underscores the extreme volatility that characterises this corner of the market — annualised swings exceed 135% — and suggests that while the long?term bet is attracting believers, patience remains essential. Against that backdrop, D?Wave’s upcoming “Qubits Europe 2026” conference in London on June 18 will be an early test of whether its commercial lead can hold up in a suddenly more crowded arena.
