DeFi Technologies: A Cashflow Paradox Emerges as Short Sellers Circle
13.05.2026 - 16:26:45 | boerse-global.deThe numbers from 2025 tell a story of staggering success. DeFi Technologies booked a record net profit of US$62.7 million on revenue of US$99.1 million, while trimming operating costs to US$52.6 million through tighter equity-based compensation and cost discipline. Yet the stock trades at €0.64, down roughly 83% over the past twelve months, and the mismatch between reported earnings and market reality is about to be put to the test.
That test comes Thursday after the US market close, when the crypto-financial firm releases its first-quarter 2026 results. A webcast for investors follows on Friday morning, and the key metric under the microscope will not be another profit number but operating cash flow — a figure that remained stubbornly negative during last year's record run.
The Shadow of Negative Cash Flow
Despite the headline profit of US$62.7 million in 2025, the company's actual cash generation has lagged. With annualised volatility approaching 91%, the shares react acutely to any gap between accounting gains and real cash inflows. If the Q1 report does not show meaningful improvement in cash flow, the selling pressure could intensify — a risk that short sellers are already betting on heavily.
Short interest has ballooned to 18.8 million shares, a surge of more than 600% compared with the prior year. The options market is pricing in a swing of roughly 33% around the earnings release, reflecting the deep uncertainty over whether the operational turnaround is translating into hard cash.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DeFi Technologies?
Assets Under Management Bruised by Crypto Rout
The primary headwind has been the decline in assets under management (AUM) at DeFi Technologies' subsidiary, Valour. Falling cryptocurrency prices dragged AUM to US$622.3 million by the end of 2025 — a drop of about 37% from the autumn peak. That slide prompted analysts to recalibrate their models. B. Riley cut its price target to US$1.00 while retaining a buy rating, arguing that current AUM levels still sit above the breakeven point. Maxim lowered its target to US$1.50 but also kept a positive recommendation.
To counter the revenue pressure, management has boosted the monetisation rate of the AUM base. In the fourth quarter, that rate climbed to 5.8%, driven by more aggressive staking and lending activities. The average staking yield rose to 4.7%. Meanwhile, Valour recorded continuous net inflows estimated at US$138.2 million over the past year, and the balance sheet at year-end showed cash and portfolio holdings of nearly US$179 million.
Expanding the Institutional Footprint
Beyond the quarterly numbers, DeFi Technologies is laying groundwork for broader distribution. A partnership with the Digital Monetary Institute (OMFIF) — extended through 2027 — aims to establish the firm's proprietary DVIO Index as a data source for central banks and asset managers. The index tracks the 50 largest crypto assets on Valour's platform.
DeFi Technologies at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Valour now lists more than 100 regulated digital investment products across European exchanges and in Brazil. These institutional efforts are designed to diversify revenue streams and reduce reliance on volatile crypto prices, but the immediate catalyst remains the cashflow question.
A Date With the Numbers
Thursday's report will also be followed by the annual general meeting scheduled for late June. For now, all attention is on whether the operating cash flow has turned positive. If it has, the stock could regain some of its lost ground. If not, the short sellers — who have already built an enormous position — may prove prescient. The divergence between DeFi Technologies' record profit and its cash reality is the defining narrative of this earnings season.
