The countdown to the 2026 football World Cup has given Deutsche Telekom an unexpected revenue booster before a single match is played. The Bonn-based group has sublicensed 60 of the 104 games to public broadcasters ARD and ZDF for a total of €152 million, covering a significant chunk of its own rights investment. The remaining 44 fixtures will run exclusively on its MagentaTV platform, and a newly struck agreement with Sky will bring those broadcasts directly into pubs and public viewing venues from 4 June, using existing Sky receivers. The deal extends Telekom’s media reach into the hospitality market just weeks before the tournament kicks off in North America.

That media push, however, is not the only story driving the stock this week. Since the start of the year, Telekom shares have edged slightly lower, and at €27.62 the price remains well below both the level seen a month ago and the 50-day moving average of €30.49. Investors have shrugged off the news of the group’s €2 billion share buyback programme for 2026. The second tranche, worth up to €550 million, is due to run until the end of June and follows a first phase that returned more than 15 million shares to the treasury. Those shares are largely earmarked for cancellation, which should lift earnings per share over time. Yet the market’s indifference points to a deeper structural issue.

That issue is the persistent valuation gap between Deutsche Telekom and its US subsidiary T-Mobile US. T-Mobile US trades on a price-to-earnings multiple of 19, while the German parent languishes at just 13. More than 70% of the group’s total market capitalisation is effectively derived from the American unit. According to insiders, management is now exploring a full merger of the two entities through a new holding company, modelled on the 2018 Praxair-Linde tie-up that created an Irish-registered corporate umbrella. A similar structure would almost certainly be domiciled outside Germany, and would involve a share exchange offer for all existing shareholders.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Such a restructuring faces formidable political obstacles. The German state, via the KfW development bank, holds roughly 28% of Deutsche Telekom’s equity. A holding company shift would dilute that influence sharply, and any plan that transfers control of critical telecom infrastructure is likely to trigger opposition in Berlin. Moreover, a capital increase – which would be required – needs the approval of 75% of shareholders. The stock closed at €27.56 on Monday, having lost more than 13% over the past twelve months.

Domestic labour tensions add a further layer of complexity. Verdi, the services union, has widened its warning strikes to multiple federal states, demanding a 6.6% wage increase for about 60,000 employees. A costly settlement would eat directly into margins at a time when the group is already spending heavily on network expansion.

All eyes now turn to Wednesday’s first-quarter results, where the board will have to address the strikes, the merger speculation, and the strategic rationale behind the media rights push in a single presentation. The management is sticking to its full-year operating profit target of around €47 billion. Options market pricing implies a potential share move of roughly 4% on the day, as investors wait to see whether the numbers can finally shift the narrative – and the stock – out of neutral.
