More than 800 emergency personnel from Germany's THW, federal police, and various rescue services gathered Wednesday at the RheinEnergie Stadium in Cologne to simulate a large-scale chemical accident. The drill, code-named "Rescon-Ex 26," focused on mass decontamination of people, vehicles, and equipment after a fictitious leak at a pesticide factory. Between 400 and 500 volunteers acted as injured victims.

The exercise served as a critical test for a new EU-funded unit called rescEU-CBRN-DECON, designed for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats. The specialized team is scheduled to reach full operational readiness by the end of 2026.

While European responders honed their skills in Germany, authorities in Vietnam conducted parallel drills at historic cultural sites. On Thursday, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, working with local police, staged firefighting and rescue simulations inside the Imperial Citadel and several royal tombs. The scenarios included a short circuit, an arson attack spreading over 150 square meters, and a vehicle fire. The goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of existing fire safety plans and improve staff response.

Exercises like these show just how critical thorough fire safety planning is — whether for a historic site or your own workplace. UK employers have legal duties to assess fire risks, plan evacuations, and train staff. The timing was deliberate: the restored throne of the Nguyen Dynasty had just returned to the Thai Hoa Palace on Thursday after an elaborate restoration between April 22 and May 4. The precious artifact had been damaged by vandalism in May 2025. Museum director Ngô V?n Minh stressed that protecting such national treasures requires joint efforts. In response, the center upgraded its surveillance systems and gave special training to security personnel.

Back in Germany, preservation of cultural heritage also received support. The German Foundation for Monument Protection allocated €55,000 to secure an artificial castle ruin in the gardens of Villa Sachsen in Bingen. The funds, to be handed over on June 10, will address risks to the observation tower, which has suffered long-term effects from a fire in 2002.

Regional fire services have intensified training for environmental hazards. On May 30, the Trier professional fire brigade, together with several volunteer units, practiced forest fire suppression between Kernscheid and Brubach. Seventy firefighters and 14 vehicles focused on long-distance water transport. On the same day, firefighters in Annaberg, Austria, conducted a barn fire drill on a farm to practice rescuing people under realistic conditions.

The global firefighting industry is currently gathering at INTERSCHUTZ 2026 in Hanover. Until Saturday, 1,750 exhibitors from 55 countries are showcasing the latest technologies, including Vietnamese company Hi?p Hòa, which is demonstrating firefighting equipment and a specialized extinguishing robot.

Cross-border cooperation takes center stage on Saturday in Taubenheim, where the 'Blue Light Mile' event will be held for the third time. A Czech fire brigade delegation from Šluknov will join German units for joint demonstrations of rescue techniques on water, land, and in the air.
