Renk stock hits 52-week low amid Ukraine peace talks, but record €6.9bn backlog and US expansion keep analysts bullish with €68 target.

Hopes of a diplomatic resolution to the war in Ukraine have spilled over into European defence stocks, with Renk bearing the brunt of the sector’s sudden reversal. The Augsburg-based transmission specialist saw its shares tumble more than 4% on Wednesday to €42.93 – a fresh 52-week low that extends the year-to-date decline to roughly 22%. The sell-off marks a stark contrast to the company’s own operating performance, where order books are bursting at the seams.

Renk kicked off the year with its best first quarter on record. Adjusted operating profit jumped to €42.4 million, lifting the corresponding margin to 15%. Order intake surged to €582 million, pushing the total order backlog to €6.9 billion. That backlog alone covers more than 90% of the revenue the group expects to book this year, providing an unusually high degree of visibility.

To keep pace with demand, the company is ramping up production aggressively. Annual gearbox output is set to rise from 300 units to 800 units by the end of the year. A strategic chunk of that capacity expansion is being funnelled into the United States, where Renk is ploughing $150 million into new facilities. The move allows the group to bypass export restrictions and secure direct access to American military programmes.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?

The US push already has tangible results. Through its subsidiary Renk America, the company has co-developed a drive-by-wire system with BAE Systems for the US Army’s Armoured Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) programme. The technology paves the way for autonomous operations and, according to management, can be adapted to other armoured platforms. Renk transmissions are already fitted in all medium-weight tracked vehicles operated by the US military.

None of this operational vigour has been enough to halt the stock’s slide. From its all-time high last October, the share price has nearly halved. Even so, analysts remain broadly upbeat. Of the 14 experts covering the stock, the consensus skews towards a buy recommendation, with an average price target of roughly €68. Warburg Research reaffirmed its buy rating after the first-quarter numbers, arguing that Renk is on track to hit the upper end of its full-year guidance. The company itself continues to expect revenue comfortably above €1 billion.

Shareholders have a busy June ahead. The annual general meeting is set for 10 June, where a domination and profit transfer agreement between the holding company and the operating GmbH will be put to a vote. The German shareholder protection association DSW has recommended approval. On the same agenda is a proposed dividend of €0.58 per share, which will go ex-dividend on 11 June. A change at the top of the supervisory board is also in motion: former Airbus executive and Diehl CEO Klaus Richter is slated to take the chair, succeeding Claus von Hermann.

Before the AGM, management will try to refocus investor attention on the order book. On 20 May, Renk is presenting at the International Investment Forum, where the board faces the delicate task of persuading the market to look past sector-wide turbulence and back to the company’s secured revenue pipeline.
