Rocket Lab Caught Between Analyst Optimism and Insider Profit-Taking as SpaceX Index Snub Weighs
05.06.2026 - 16:58:46 | boerse-global.deThe space sector's most anticipated initial public offering in years has taken an unexpected turn, and Rocket Lab is feeling the ripple effects. S&P Dow Jones Indices has denied SpaceX rapid entry into the S&P 500, citing the launch giant's failure to meet GAAP profitability standards after posting a net loss of $4.94 billion in fiscal 2025 — a decision that undercuts the passive fund inflows many traders had expected. For Rocket Lab, widely viewed as a liquid proxy for pure-play space exposure, the development triggered a premarket slide of roughly 3% on Friday, sending shares toward the $115 mark and widening the gap from their recent peak of $151.
Yet even as the index snub cools near-term sentiment, one analyst has pushed his bull case to new heights. Clear Street's Greg Pendy reaffirmed his buy rating and raised his price target to $129 — the highest among all analysts covering the stock — from $98, implying roughly 12.5% upside from current levels. His thesis hinges on a structural shortage of launch capacity. Amazon has already requested an FCC extension for its satellite project because its factory is churning out up to 30 satellites a week faster than they can be deployed. That bottleneck, Pendy argues, is tailor-made for Rocket Lab's Neutron rocket, which could enter a market where SpaceX is booked solid through 2027 and Blue Origin remains grounded for months to come — provided Neutron's maiden flight succeeds in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The analyst community, however, is far from unanimous. Of the 18 analysts surveyed, only nine rate Rocket Lab a "buy," four recommend "hold," and the consensus price target stands at $103.91 — below the stock's current trading level. The divergence reflects an underlying tension: the company's operational momentum has yet to fully eclipse the risks surrounding its most ambitious project.
Adding to the caution are insider sales that have raised eyebrows. Four company insiders, including President Marvin Clevenger, COO Frank Klein, and General Counsel Arjun Kampani, unloaded stock worth roughly $18 million this week, some via prearranged trading plans. The sales coincide with a year-to-date gain of over 60% in Rocket Lab's shares, and they dilute the signal sent by institutional buyers like Eurizon Capital SGR S.p.A., which added 43,471 shares worth about $3 million on June 2.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab USA?
Operationally, Rocket Lab has a near-term checkpoint that could refocus attention on its growing defense business. On June 10, the company is scheduled to launch its suborbital HASTE mission, dubbed "Curveball," from Wallops Island, Virginia. The hypersonic accelerator test program strengthens Rocket Lab's relationship with government clients and diversifies its revenue beyond standard orbital launches, an important step as the company builds a broader service profile that includes geostationary missions.
The longer-term narrative, however, remains firmly anchored to Neutron. After a tank test failure early this year, management is sticking with the fourth-quarter 2026 target for the rocket's first flight. A successful static-fire test in the third quarter would provide an early positive signal. Five firm launch contracts are already on the books. Any further delay in Neutron or a slowdown in order intake would likely weigh on the stock.
Rocket Lab's financials offer a solid foundation for the story. First-quarter revenue surged 63.5% year over year to $200.35 million, gross margin improved markedly, and the backlog swelled to $2.2 billion. The company has guided second-quarter revenue of $225 million to $240 million, above the consensus estimate.
Rocket Lab USA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Meanwhile, SpaceX's long-awaited IPO — expected on June 12 with a valuation of at least $1.8 trillion — looms as both a tailwind and a distraction. The listing could lift the entire space sector, but the index exclusion reminds investors that even massive scale does not guarantee immediate equity market access. For Rocket Lab, the immediate task is to deliver reliability with its HASTE flights while proving that Neutron can scale over time. The June 10 launch provides the next operational milestone; the path to a higher valuation runs through Neutron's launch pad.
