A deadly explosion at Glencore's Kazzinc mine and a potential US-Iran agreement drive silver to $77.18, fueled by supply fears and geopolitical shifts.

A deadly explosion in Kazakhstan and a sudden thaw in US-Iran relations have combined to jolt the silver market, sending prices soaring more than 6% to $77.18 per ounce on Wednesday. The rally, which marked a new monthly high, reflects a rare convergence of supply-side disruption and geopolitical easing that has reshuffled investor priorities.

Supply Shock from the Steppe

The tragedy unfolded at Glencore’s Kazzinc facility in eastern Kazakhstan, where an explosion killed two workers and injured five others. Kazzinc, the country’s largest zinc producer, is also a major silver miner. The extent of the production halt remains unclear, but the incident hits a market already bracing for scarcity.

The Silver Institute projects a supply deficit of roughly 46 million ounces for 2026 — the sixth consecutive year of shortfall. Solar panel manufacturers alone are expected to consume 650 million ounces this year, underscoring the metal’s deepening industrial dependency.

Diplomacy Reshapes the Macro Picture

The bigger catalyst arrived from Washington. Reports indicate the White House is nearing a comprehensive agreement with Tehran, under which Iran would accept UN inspections and halt uranium enrichment for at least 12 years in exchange for sanctions relief. A deal would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for global energy flows.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?

The implications for silver are twofold. Lower oil prices would ease inflation, dragging down US Treasury yields and making non-yielding precious metals more attractive. At the same time, restored shipping routes would revive global manufacturing — the single largest consumer of silver.

The market reaction was immediate. Brent and WTI crude plunged by double-digit percentages, while the dollar weakened. Investors rotated into hard assets, with silver outperforming gold, which also climbed above $4,710. The gold-to-silver ratio dropped to around 61, signaling strong preference for the industrial metal.

Industrial Demand Keeps the Floor

Beyond geopolitics, real-economy demand remains robust. Photovoltaics and electric vehicles continue to absorb record volumes of silver. Year-to-date, silver has gained 132%, far outstripping gold’s advance.

Mining companies are well-positioned to capitalize. Pan American Silver reported first-quarter production of 6.4 million ounces, with all-in sustaining costs falling to $6.63 per ounce. Such margins provide a comfortable buffer even if prices retreat.

Technical Resistance and Monetary Headwinds

The rally faces immediate technical hurdles. Silver is wrestling with its 50-day moving average near $77, with the next resistance at $80. A break above that level would confirm the uptrend. On the downside, support sits around $70.

Silber Preis at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The Federal Reserve remains a drag. With the fed funds rate at a maximum of 3.75% and core inflation stubbornly high at 3.1% in April, rate cuts are not imminent. Morgan Stanley analysts do not expect the first move until 2027, capping near-term enthusiasm.

Still, the structural deficit is the dominant force. As long as industrial demand outpaces mine supply, the market will remain tight. The combination of a deadly mine accident and a diplomatic breakthrough has only tightened the screws further.
