VanEck's Dividend Fund Nears a Crucial Crossroads: Ex-Date and Rebalancing Loom

A $7.6bn dividend ETF nears record highs with $24bn inflows in Q1, but an RSI of 83.8 and a semi-annual rebalancing in June signal potential volatility ahead.

Global income strategies are making a forceful comeback. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, some $24 billion poured into dividend-focused funds. One of the biggest beneficiaries of this shift has been the VanEck Morningstar Developed Markets Dividend Leaders UCITS ETF, a €7.6bn giant that now finds itself at a pivotal juncture. The fund recently changed hands at €52.27, just shy of its record high, having gained roughly 8% since the start of the year. Yet that rally has pushed the relative strength index to 83.8, signalling short-term overheating. June presents a double test: a quarterly dividend payout and a semi?annual portfolio overhaul that could reshuffle the deck.

The ex?dividend date falls on 4 June, with the cash distribution landing a week later. Over the past twelve months, investors have received a total of €1.74 per share, translating to an annual yield of 3.30%. Coinciding with that payout is the index’s semi?annual rebalancing, governed by a strict set of rules that act as a quality sieve. Each constituent must have raised its dividend over the previous five years, while the payout ratio cannot exceed 75% of earnings. Any stock that falls short is ejected from the 100?name portfolio. A sector cap of 40% ensures diversification does not get thrown out with the bathwater.

Adding another layer of discipline is the fund’s sustainability framework. Classified under Article 8 of the EU’s disclosure regulation, it relies on Sustainalytics to screen for ESG criteria, automatically excluding companies with exposure to controversial weapons or tobacco. To cater to growing demand from accumulation?minded investors, VanEck also launched a sister fund in late April on the London Stock Exchange. This new vehicle withholds US stocks and reinvests income automatically. The structural reason is simple: the main fund, domiciled in the Netherlands, benefits from local tax advantages but cannot offer an accumulating share class. The new product, housed in Ireland, plugs that gap — and both carry the same total expense ratio of 0.38%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying VanEck Morningstar Developed Markets Dividend Leaders UCITS ETF?

From a sector perspective, financials dominate at 31% of assets, with energy making up the second?largest allocation. The top individual holding is Exxon Mobil, at 5.64% of the portfolio, followed by Verizon Communications (4.64%) and TotalEnergies (3.64%). Exxon’s own ex?dividend date fell on 15 May, adding an extra catalyst for income seekers. The broader macroeconomic backdrop bolsters these heavyweight sectors: the European Central Bank holds its deposit rate at 2.0%, while Eurozone inflation has ticked back up to 3.0%, making capital?intensive industries with steady cash flows increasingly attractive.

As the June rebalancing approaches, the fund’s filter mechanism is ready to eliminate any laggards that fail the payout?ratio test, potentially displacing some of the current heavyweights. Meanwhile, the elevated RSI suggests a near?term pullback could be in store, but the relentless inflows into dividend strategies — and the ETF’s own track record — underscore the deep demand for this kind of disciplined income approach. The next few weeks will reveal whether the portfolio can keep its momentum intact while simultaneously turning over its weakest links.
