The official Bowie80 announcement places the Dundee exhibition within a wider programme of archive projects and special events. V&A Touring and V&A National Programmes developed the presentation with partner venues across the United Kingdom, and Harriet Reed is its curator.

The exhibition is built around four sections examining image-making, live performance, studio work, screen appearances and Bowie’s creative process. Its material shows how a figure in popular music developed changing stage identities while moving between sound, fashion, photography and film.
Among the objects are a Ziggy Stardust-era acoustic guitar, costume and make-up materials, Polaroids, unrealised scripts, handwritten lyrics and performance notes. The archive also includes objects connected with The Next Day and Blackstar, allowing the exhibition to connect early stage imagery with later recordings.

The Dundee presentation extends beyond concert memorabilia. Its photography section includes work associated with Terry O’Neill, Mick Rock, Sukita and Brian Ward, while other displays trace Bowie’s work in music videos and cinema.
Visitors will also see material connected with Low, Heroes, Lodger and Let’s Dance. By placing handwritten lyrics beside costumes, instruments and screen materials, the presentation connects Bowie’s songwriting, performance and visual work in one route through the archive.
