- From 16 November 2026, the National Park Service will apply the final vehicle rule at Denali National Park and Preserve.
- The revised regulation sets a 160-vehicle limit for each 24-hour period on the restricted road section.
- The 92-mile road was built between 1922 and 1938 and provides access to the park's wildlife and wilderness landscapes.
- Winter 2026-27 conditions currently limit vehicle travel to mile 3, according to the National Park Service.
Denali National Park and Preserve faces a new vehicle limit from 16 November 2026, when a National Park Service rule changes how traffic is regulated on the park road. The change concerns the restricted section in Alaska, while current winter conditions limit vehicle travel much closer to the entrance.
Denali vehicle limit starts on 16 November 2026
The final rule was published in the Federal Register on 16 October 2026 and takes effect on 16 November 2026. It replaces a seasonal total of 10,512 motor vehicle permits with a limit of no more than 160 vehicles entering the restricted section during each 24-hour period.
The restricted section covers the road from the west end of the Savage River Bridge at mile 14.8 to the former Mount McKinley National Park boundary north of Wonder Lake at mile 87.9. The regulation applies during the visitor season, which starts on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and ends on the second Thursday after Labor Day. The Federal Register rule says every vehicle entering the restricted section counts, including buses and National Park Service vehicles.
The rule also removes wording that could have ended the visitor season on 15 September when that date came before the second Thursday after Labor Day. This gives the National Park Service a consistent season definition and could allow additional access days in some years.
Denali Park Road links wildlife and wilderness access
The park road is 92 miles long and was built between 1922 and 1938. It crosses landscapes used by Dall sheep, caribou, wolves, grizzly bears, moose and foxes, making the traffic rule directly relevant to how visitors reach wildlife viewing areas.
The 160-vehicle ceiling formalises a standard already used by the National Park Service since 2012 under the Denali Park Road Vehicle Management Plan. Its connection with the road's long history is practical: the same route that carries visitors through the Alaska Range also concentrates vehicle movements that the agency monitors for wildlife and visitor conditions.
The rule arrives before the planned return of full bus service in 2027. The Pretty Rocks Bridge was completed in August 2026, reconnecting the road after a landslide had interrupted the route, while the park's current conditions page says full-length bus service will resume in 2027. The National Park Service conditions page says reservations for summer 2027 buses and campgrounds will open on 1 December 2026.
