Pilar Basilica, Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, in Zaragoza presented its completed dome restoration on 5 October 2026. The work has renewed the Regina Patriarcharum dome and changed what visitors can see at the entrance to the lower part of the temple.

Fundación Ibercaja financed the intervention, while the Metropolitan Chapter of Zaragoza presented it as part of the Pilar 2040 plan. The announcement came inside the current visit window and gives travellers a specific reason to look again at one of the basilica’s painted domes.

Regina Patriarcharum restoration finished on 5 October

The restored dome was painted by Ramón Bayeu in 1782. The intervention recovered colour and pictorial quality in the dome, while also bringing the original polychromy of its lantern to light after decades beneath later paint layers. The work was carried out over seven months.

The restoration included the dome and its pendentives, as well as the lantern and spire. New conservation measures were added to support the condition of the ensemble. EFE reported the completed restoration on 5 October 2026.

The project was financed in full by Fundación Ibercaja and presented by the Metropolitan Chapter. It is linked to a longer programme intended to prepare the temple for 2040, the year associated with the bimillennium of the Virgin’s arrival in Zaragoza in local tradition.

The restored dome reconnects Bayeu with the Holy Chapel

Regina Patriarcharum forms part of the painted programme around the Holy Chapel. That connection gives the current restoration a precise place within the building rather than treating it as a standalone conservation project.

The present basilica grew from a building process that began in 1681 with plans by Felipe Sánchez and Herrera el Mozo. From 1750, Ventura Rodríguez reshaped the design, created the Holy Chapel and added cupolas and towers to the exterior plan. The Zaragoza tourism authority describes the basilica as a major Marian sanctuary and artistic centre with works from several periods, including frescoes by Goya.

The building therefore presents several layers of architectural and artistic history. The newly restored dome belongs to the eighteenth-century phase associated with the Bayeu family, while the Holy Chapel reflects Rodríguez’s intervention in the later development of the Baroque temple.

Further restoration is planned under Pilar 2040

The Metropolitan Chapter has indicated that further work is expected. Possible future interventions include one of the nearby domes, Regina Sanctorum Omnium or Regina Virginum, depending on their condition.

The plan also includes the rehabilitation of Santa Leonor tower. Other work already presented includes restoration of the San Joaquín chapel and new lighting for the Holy Chapel and the high altar. No date has been given for the next dome intervention.
