SANParks announced upgrades at Addo National Park on 21 October 2026, covering accommodation, infrastructure and visitor facilities in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. The programme is already changing what travellers can find at the park, with eight family accommodation units open and further works planned for December 2026.
SANParks sets out Addo National Park upgrade programme
The South African National Parks authority said it had invested R136.5 million in the programme, which is intended to improve tourism infrastructure, visitor facilities and operational sustainability. The announcement followed a visit by Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister David Maynier on 19 October 2026.
According to the SANParks upgrade announcement, eight modern family accommodation units have been completed and are open to visitors. Upgrades to bulk sewer and electrical infrastructure have also been completed, while a new spa is operating.
Additional accommodation, refurbished existing units, a guest house and a swimming pool are planned for December 2026. A new 10-unit Community Lodge is expected to be completed by December, with its official opening and operations planned for January 2027. A completed 705-kW grid-tied solar plant is also scheduled for commissioning in January 2027.
Addo National Park links new facilities to its conservation history
The park was proclaimed in 1931 to protect the remaining 11 Addo elephants. Its original area covered just over 2,000 hectares, and an elephant-proof fence developed by park manager Graham Armstrong enclosed 2,270 hectares in 1954.
Today, the park is managed by SANParks and is described by the operator as South Africa’s third-largest national park. It extends across the Eastern Cape and includes terrestrial and marine environments. Its wildlife offer includes the traditional Big Five as well as southern right whales and great white sharks in the marine section.
The relationship between the current works and the park’s history is direct: a site created for one threatened species now needs infrastructure that supports accommodation, utilities, roads and wider biodiversity conservation. The government account of the investment also records that road maintenance is under way and that ablution facilities and hiking trails are priorities for SANParks.
