BYD is doubling down on technology at both ends of the electric-vehicle spectrum. Within days, the Chinese automaker has unveiled a 1,582-horsepower supercar that sprints to 100 km/h in under two seconds and a family saloon that packs 400 kilometres of range into just five minutes of charging. Yet for all the engineering fireworks, the stock is stuck in a sideways drift, still nursing a double-digit decline for the year.

The Denza Z, revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Britain, marks BYD’s entry into the high-performance EV segment. Built under its premium Denza brand, the Z comes in three variants: a hardtop, a soft-top convertible and a performance edition. All share a 2,780-mm wheelbase and a three-motor drivetrain — one at the front, two at the rear — that delivers 1,180 kW of system power. The hardtop and convertible top out at 300 km/h, while the performance version pushes to 350 km/h. A fully in-house steer-by-wire system, the first of its kind from a Chinese developer, is the technical headline. The Z first appeared as a concept at the April 2025 Shanghai Auto Show; the production version followed at the Beijing show last April. Sales begin in Europe, with the home market coming later.

On the same tech-intensive front, BYD rolled out the Seal 08, the 17-millionth new-energy vehicle it has built. That car is the first to carry the second-generation Blade battery paired with an 800-volt architecture. The result: a full charge takes just nine minutes, and even at minus 30 degrees Celsius the time only stretches to around 12 minutes. The all-electric variant offers a range of 905 kilometres, while the plug-in hybrid version stretches that to 1,660 kilometres. To underpin the faster charging, BYD is rapidly building out its own network: it already operates just over 7,000 fast-charging stations in China and has set a target of 20,000 by the end of 2026. The Seal 08 also comes with rear-axle steering that shrinks the turning circle to 4.95 metres, plus standard air suspension and a LiDAR system for autonomous driving.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The technological push comes as BYD maintains its position as one of only three profitable EV brands in China, even as the broader domestic market for electric cars contracted in the first half of the year. The company sold roughly 1.81 million vehicles over the period, with exports jumping 68% to nearly 790,000 units. That overseas momentum is holding up despite the European Union’s new 17% tariff on Chinese-made EVs.

On the stock side, BYD shares closed at €9.54, up 6.93% over the week but still 1.80% lower on the month. Since the start of 2025, the stock has shed 12.92%. That leaves it 35.54% below the 52-week high of €14.80 touched in July 2025, though a comfortable 18.79% above the low of €8.03 set at the end of June. The 14-day relative-strength index sits at 55.5, signaling neither overbought nor oversold territory. The stock is trading just under its 50-day moving average of €9.84, while the gap to the 200-day average of €10.72 is roughly 11%. A 30-day annualized volatility of nearly 41% underscores the ongoing uncertainty.

Separately, BYD donated 10 million yuan (about €1.3 million) for flood relief in Guangxi following Tropical Storm Maysak. Operationally, the next major milestone is the opening of its first European factory in Hungary, scheduled for the end of 2026. Whether the Denza Z and Seal 08 can translate technological bravado into sustained share-price gains will depend on how quickly European buyers take delivery — and on how the market weighs tariffs, home-market softness and the cost of building an infrastructure network from scratch.
